Mor’du’s journey to his family in Alaska

In early June of 2022, Mor'du the cat went missing. His owners lived in Maryland but were in the process of moving to Alaska. Mor’du has always been a strictly indoor cat, so his owners were concerned that he would escape when the movers came and could not find his way back home. They thought it would d be a good idea to take him to a relative’s house in Delaware just for a couple of days. We can only assume that Mor’du did not think it was a good idea because on his first night in Delaware, he found a way out of the house. His owners' relative was sleeping with Mor’du to keep him company when suddenly a loud noise woke him up. Mor’du had popped the air conditioning tube out of the window and immediately jumped out. His owners immediately went to Delaware to search for him and alerted the neighbors to be on the lookout. They were so concerned they sent out missing reports and even put out traps. Unfortunately, all they caught was a fox. It was already time for his owners to move to Alaska, yet Mor’du was nowhere to be found. One of the family members stayed behind hoping to find him but eventually had to join the rest of the family in Alaska.

After eight long months, the owners finally received an email saying his microchip had finally been scanned. Somehow, the indoor cat traveled from the relative's house to his old neighborhood in Maryland. Nobody ever thought of telling people there to look out for him considering it is over 50 miles away and across the Susquehanna River. Poor Mor’du had come crying to someone's door, probably exhausted from his long trip and definitively missing his owners. They could not take him in due to their dogs but were still able to offer refuge and kept him fed. A couple of months later, they took him to the vet, where they scanned his microchip and discovered he was reported missing. They drove him to the shelter in Delaware, closest to where he went missing, for him to have the best chance of being reunited with his family. A week later, Mor'du was on a flight, accompanied by a relative, to his new home in North Pole Alaska, where his beloved family had waited so long to reunite with him.

Mor'du's story is the perfect example of why microchipping pets is an essential practice. It’s the only permanent and reliable method to identify a lost pet, paving the way for their reunion with their worried owners.
