Dog Breeds - Beagle

Return to Top Ten Insured Breeds List
The energetic Beagle was bred to hunt using their strong sense of smell. They were used to hunt rabbits, foxes and even deer! Like most breeds from the hound group, the beagle can get easily get lost following a scent and, if not being used to hunt, should be kept in a secure area. Beagle owners should consider microchipping their pet to ensure that if lost their pet can be permanently identified.

Though they love the outdoors, Beagles should not be left in a backyard unattended for long periods of time. They are very curious and can bore quite easily, which will cause them to bark, dig, and attempt escape. Their curiosity can lead to stubbornness which can make them difficult to train. They were used in the past to hunt in very large packs, and as a result enjoy being in a group and usually get along great with other dogs. Beagles do not like to be left alone and can suffer from separation anxiety. They are happiest if kept in pairs. Beagles should be monitored with other smaller pets like cats (that are similar in size to rabbits), as their hunting instincts can take over.

Protect Your Pet Today
My husband had been to get an oil change and the men at the garage had kindly put a free bottle of windshield washer fluid in the back seat. However, they forgot to tell him. On the way home he stopped by the grocery store. Zoe, my 3-year-old boxer, was in the back seat and bit into and drank the washer fluid! Zoe was immediately sick and we rushed her to our local veterinarian. We were then hurried to the Animal Hospital where they were more equipped to deal with poisonings. At first they didn't think Zoe would make it, but she pulled through. She stayed in the hospital for 2 days. Without Pethealth Zoe would have been put down. Pethealth covered a huge amount of the bill. We heard about 24Petwatch Pet Insurance through our local veterinarian. Zoe has a great personality, is wonderful with children and the joy of my life.
