Dog Breeds - Basset Hound

Return to Breed List

The Basset Hound was commonly used to hunt smaller game such as pheasant and rabbits. Their short legs carry them slowly, making them easy for the hunters to follow by foot. They have very long ears which actually helps them follow and gather scent in a hunt for game. They have a gentle temperament, and because they have been bred to work in a pack, they get along well with other pets. Exercise is very important for Basset Hounds because any extra weight is a strain on their short legs and spine. Obesity can lead to many other serious health problems such as heart problems, spinal problems, or arthritis. They have a deep, loud voice and love to use it! Their stubborn nature can make controlling barking a difficult task. Their short legs and body proportions make them awful swimmers and they should not be left unattended near a pool area. They also should be kept in a secure area as they have a tendency to follow a scent without paying attention to possible dangers around them, or how to get home!

Protect Your Pet Today
I'm writing to express my heartfelt gratitude in regards to the assistance Pethealth provided me when my husky, Skye, became suddenly ill. A large bump was discovered in her chest on a Thursday. I scheduled an appointment with her vet for Friday... Unexpectedly, I had to leave the office without my angel because the vet informed me that she had a tumor that required immediate removal. Knowing that I had insurance to help pay medical expenses was a tremendous relief - I was so distraught at having to leave her that the last thing I needed to worry about was a $1,500.00 bill! Less than 2 weeks later, a cheque arrived from Pethealth to reimburse me for every penny! (minus the deductible) I highly recommend Pethealth to anyone considering pet health insurance. Pethealth truly does provide peace-of-mind at a time when all you care about is the safety and health of your beloved pet.
