Dog Breeds - American Foxhound

Return to Breed List

The American Foxhound is a very loving breed with an abundance of energy. They require a lot of exercise and attention or else they will use their energy destructively, scratching at things and tearing them apart. They are intelligent when it comes to escape, however can get caught up with following a scent trail which can lead them into dangerous situations in urban areas where they may follow a scent onto a busy street. Their strong sense of smell and natural instincts makes this breed a great hunter, especially within a pack. Their friendly nature towards humans makes them wonderful companions but mediocre watch dogs. The American Foxhound has been bred overtime to be very friendly, weeding out the ones that have been more aggressive towards humans. This breed has an athletic build, and a willingness to work. The American Foxhound breed is known for its unique tone of voice.

Ellee Mae was just 4 months old when I was doing renovations on the kitchen. I had mixed up a bucket of wallpaper remover and water and went upstairs. I was barely out of the room before I realized the danger of the bucket and an active puppy. When I returned Ellee Mae began to vomit almost immediately. She was brought to emergency where she was kept overnight and then for one more day at her own veterinarian's. I am so happy to have had 24Petwatch Pet Insurance to help cover the expenses. I learned a very valuable lesson that day.
