Dog Breeds - American Eskimo

Return to Breed List

The American Eskimo is a member of the Spitz breed family, very closely related to the German Spitz. The German Spitz was brought to America and renamed during the Second World War because of bitterness towards Germany. The American Eskimo may also be related to the Samoyed and White Keeshond. They are easy to train but should be thoroughly socialized at a young age, and must be trained with respect as they do not respond well to aggressiveness. They may be initially wary of strangers but warm up to them quickly. They love to bark but usually only do so when provoked, and require a lot of attention. This breed typically takes longer to mature emotionally, often keeping puppy traits for approximately 2 years. The American Eskimo is an intelligent breed that can develop behavioral issues if they do not receive enough attention and are not mentally stimulated American Eskimos have drier skin then most breeds and therefore smell less and require fewer bathes.
