The Akbash originated in the mountains and plains of Turkey approximately 3000 years ago. This breed is a very rare mix of Gazehound and Mastiff. With their large, lean size and great strength, this breed’s original primary function was to protect sheep from predators. The Akbash is known to be gentle and loyal to it’s family and suspicious of strangers, making it an ideal watchdog. They are known for their courage, independent nature, and intelligence. Though they can adapt to indoor living, the breed prefers to be outdoors and enjoys guard duties. The Akbash has more recently been used in North America to guard unique livestock such as ostriches, deer, llamas, miniature horses, and emu!

When I visited my vet's office, I saw
Pethealth's pet insurance brochures on display. After reading about their
accident and illness programs, I took out a policy for Buddy, my Golden
Retriever. Boy was I glad that I did! It was not long after purchasing
the insurance that Buddy developed an acute allergic reaction. He experienced
itchy, inflamed bumps in his neck, throat and abdominal area. Left untreated,
the condition would have been terminal. Over the course of his treatment,
Buddy saw six different veterinarians. It was comforting to know I could
go forward with the treatment, and did not need to worry about the high
cost of the procedures. Today Buddy is happy and healthy. Thank-you Pethealth.
