Compared to other dog breeds, bulldogs do not need a significant amount of exercise, however daily walks are a requirement for a happy healthy dog and to avoid unnecessary weight gain. Bulldogs are extremely sensitive to heat and cold and you should ensure that you do not take your bulldog out for extended periods of time in extreme weather conditions.

The bulldog stands out amongst other breeds dog, due to the unique characteristics that have been developed through selective breeding techniques to meet accepted “breed guidelines”. The large head with loose flaps of skin, the rolling gait and pronounced underbite that define the breed can also cause health issues. As the new owner of a bulldog it is important to be aware of their special needs to ensure that you can provide them with the kind of care that will result in a long and happy life. Bulldogs need only occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush. Bathing or dry shampooing should only be done when necessary. Some bulldogs have shown allergenic tendencies, watch your new pet for signs of allergies such as dry or reddened skin and ongoing itching.

Daily teeth brushing with a regular human soft toothbrush using a vet approved toothpaste is recommended for all bulldogs. Breathing issues can be prevalent in the breed due to the shape of the lower jaw and the shortness of muzzle - bulldogs are known to snore so think about putting your dog’s bed in another room if you are a light sleeper.

Bulldogs have a tendancy to slobber and drool, it is good practice to clean your dog’s face folds every day to avoid unwanted infections caused by moisture accumulation. Growing to 40-50 pounds on average (reference: AKC breed guide), bulldogs are suitable for houses as well as apartments due to their size and comparative lack of energy. They are quite active as puppies but become progressively more sedentary as they get older.
