Return to Breed List The Bloodhound is a friendly, mild-mannered breed with a great talent for scent tracking. Though it is believed the original Bloodhounds came from France, the they were bred and improved by monks in Belgium. It’s mild-mannered, gentle nature makes it a great dog for children. It enjoys the company of children however younger children should be monitored to ensure they are treating the dog with care as they are likely to endure mistreatment from children rather then snap back! They are also quite friendly towards strangers and other pets.
The Bloodhound is known for its great sense of smell. In fact, they are used often by police to track criminals and missing people. They have larger nasal chambers then other breeds, which increases its ability to detect skin cells. Their facial wrinkles help to catch the floating scent particles, helping them track. Their long ears also assist by shielding wind from blowing skin cells from under their nose. When it comes to steadily tracking a scent, this breed is tireless and determined. This is a great trait when set to work, but becomes a distraction for them during obedience training. Bloodhounds are extremely loyal. Being separated from their owner may cause distress for this breed, and as a result they may stop eating.

My husband had been to get an oil change and the men at the garage had kindly put a free bottle of windshield washer fluid in the back seat. However, they forgot to tell him. On the way home he stopped by the grocery store. Zoe, my 3-year-old boxer, was in the back seat and bit into and drank the washer fluid! Zoe was immediately sick and we rushed her to our local veterinarian. We were then hurried to the Animal Hospital where they were more equipped to deal with poisonings. At first they didn't think Zoe would make it, but she pulled through. She stayed in the hospital for 2 days. Without Pethealth Zoe would have been put down. Pethealth covered a huge amount of the bill. We heard about 24Petwatch Pet Insurance through our local veterinarian. Zoe has a great personality, is wonderful with children and the joy of my life.
