Dog Breeds - Black and Tan Coonhound |
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a dedicated breed that is eager to work. The breed originated in the Appalachian and Smokey mountains of the United States. It is believed that they are a mix of the Bloodhound and Foxhound. They are quite trainable with a firm and ongoing approach. They may show signs of aggression, but generally can be easily controlled by its owner. Though some are quite friendly, most are reserved towards strangers, and dominate towards other dogs. They can play rough and may not be suitable for young children but make great companion for older children. The Black and Tan Coonhound is a strong breed that is built to get a lot of exercise, and should be given a home with a large yard/property. They are inactive indoors and without proper exercise can easily overeat and become obese. They were originally used to hunt raccoon, mountain lion, deer, opossum and even bears! They can track almost any mammal through its scent trail, and prefers to do so at night. When walking this breed (especially in urban areas, they should not be let off of a leash as they will quickly pick up a scent and may take off! The Black and Tan Coonhound is not a quiet breed and tends to howl if left alone for too long. They require minimal grooming but should be brushed weekly, and their eyes/ears should be cleaned often. Their long ears and large eyelids make them prone to eye/ear infections and routine cleaning should occur to keep their eyes and ears healthy. They may also need to have their face cleaned often because they tend to drool quite a bit!

Pethealth has been fantastic. When Tasha was diagnosed with cancer, it gave me the ability to have her treated with much less concern over the finances. It allows for a much less selfish decision and allowed me to do the right thing for her without thinking about the money. Thank you for the quick way you handled it too. At a time of stress, you made that easy. She lived over a year after her diagnosis and almost all of that was with high life quality thanks to your help.
