The Basenji’s DNA reveals that it is among the oldest dog breeds in the world! They have been found painted on the walls of some Egyptian tombs from over 5000 years ago! The breed dwindled out and could only be found in the Congo region in Africa until 1930 when several Basenji’s were brought to England and were bred and exported all over the world. They have many other names including Congo Dog, African Bush Dog and African Barkless. They are called African Barkless because they are silent breed that does not bark! Their Larynx is built differently then most dogs which does not allow for barking, however they can still make low growling or excited yodeling sound. Another advantage for Basenji owners is the breed’s cleanliness. They are much like cats and clean themselves often, therefore they do not require a lot of grooming. They also do not shed very much and their skin/hair does not carry a doggy odour. The Basenji is a very intelligent and responds well to training from a young age.

When I visited my vet's office, I saw
Pethealth's pet insurance brochures on display. After reading about their
accident and illness programs, I took out a policy for Buddy, my Golden
Retriever. Boy was I glad that I did! It was not long after purchasing
the insurance that Buddy developed an acute allergic reaction. He experienced
itchy, inflamed bumps in his neck, throat and abdominal area. Left untreated,
the condition would have been terminal. Over the course of his treatment,
Buddy saw six different veterinarians. It was comforting to know I could
go forward with the treatment, and did not need to worry about the high
cost of the procedures. Today Buddy is happy and healthy. Thank-you Pethealth.
