Dog Breeds - Australian Terrier

Return to Breed List

The Australian Terrier is one of the few terrier breeds that did not originate from the British Isles. Like its name suggests, this breed originated in Australia sometime in the 19th century. This breed, commonly referred to as “aussie”, first appeared in the US in the late 1940’s. They were originally used for rodent and snake control. Though it’s small in size it is very big in courage. The Australian Terrier’s sharp hearing, eyesight, and courage help make it a great watchdog. They are relatively friendly with other pets if raised properly, but tend to chase animals smaller then itself. They tend to be suspicious towards strangers and protective of its family making them mistaken for being unfriendly. This breed is relatively easy to train, however does require a firm trainer. Australian Terriers are one of the smallest terrier breeds and is believed to be a mix of many different terriers including the Irish, Norwich, Yorkshire, and Skye Terrier.

When I visited my vet's office, I saw Pethealth's pet insurance brochures on display. After reading about their accident and illness programs, I took out a policy for Buddy, my Golden Retriever. Boy was I glad that I did! It was not long after purchasing the insurance that Buddy developed an acute allergic reaction. He experienced itchy, inflamed bumps in his neck, throat and abdominal area. Left untreated, the condition would have been terminal. Over the course of his treatment, Buddy saw six different veterinarians. It was comforting to know I could go forward with the treatment, and did not need to worry about the high cost of the procedures. Today Buddy is happy and healthy. Thank-you Pethealth.
